Equine Therapy Riding and Yoga

Integrating yoga with equine therapy riding is a powerful way to enhance the experience of a session. The combination of stretching, breathing, and mindfulness can have a profound impact on both the body and the mind.

As a yoga instructor, it felt only natural to add yoga to the mix. It has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, improve flexibility and balance, and increase body awareness. When integrated with a therapy riding session, yoga can enhance the benefits of the therapy by helping participants to become more centered, focused, and present in the moment.

So, how can yoga be integrated into a therapy sessions? One way is to begin each session with a few minutes of stretching and breathing exercises. This can help to warm up the body and prepare the mind for the therapy session ahead. Participants can also be guided through simple stretches and breathing exercises that can be done while standing or seated on the horse.

During the therapy session, participants can be encouraged to focus on their breath and body awareness. They can be guided through simple yoga poses that can be done while riding the horse, such as seated twists or forward folds. These poses can help to improve balance and flexibility, as well as promote relaxation and mindfulness.

At the end of the session, participants can be guided through a few minutes of relaxation and meditation. This can help to reduce stress and anxiety, and leave participants feeling centered and calm.

In our practice at Better Together, integrating yoga with equine therapy riding sessions has proven a powerful way to enhance the benefits of the session. By incorporating stretching, breathing, and mindfulness, participants can improve their physical and emotional well-being, and experience a deeper connection with the horses they are working with.
